JioHotstar Launches in India, Combining Jiocinema and Disney+ Hotstar Content
JioCinema Jio Hotstar: In a landmark development for Indian streaming, JioHotstar has officially launched, allowing users to access a diverse library of content from both Jiocinema and Disney+ Hotstar within a single app. The transition marks a significant merger in the OTT space, as the traditional Disney+ Hotstar has undergone a rebranding with a new logo to align with the JioHotstar identity.

Currently, users can enjoy free access to the platform, which features an array of content, including original programming and offerings from international studios such as NBCUniversal, Warner Bros, Discovery, HBO, and Paramount. This consolidation means viewers can now find popular series like Game of Thrones and Marvel films without needing multiple subscriptions.
“At the core of JioHotstar is a powerful vision—to make premium entertainment truly accessible to all Indians,” stated Kiran Mani, CEO of Digital at JioStar. “Our promise of Infinite Possibilities ensures that entertainment is no longer a privilege but a shared experience for all.” The platform aims to personalize content through AI-driven recommendations and will support streaming in over 19 languages, catering to a wide audience across India.
As for subscription details, JioHotstar is currently free to access, but future plans may include paywalled content. Subscription options will be available for users who desire an ad-free experience and enhanced streaming quality, starting at ₹149 per quarter. Kevin Vaz, CEO of entertainment at JioStar, assured existing Disney+ Hotstar subscribers that their experience would remain unchanged, while JioCinema subscribers would see their plans auto-upgraded to premium status.
Existing subscribers from both platforms will seamlessly transition to JioHotstar. Upon their first login, users can set up their subscriptions, while new users can explore available plans. However, questions linger regarding whether the reported user count reflects duplicate accounts from the merged platforms, with more information on content access and monetization expected soon.
JioHotstar has also introduced Sparks, an initiative designed to spotlight India’s top digital creators. The platform aims to be the go-to destination for sports livestreaming, combining content from both Jiocinema and Disney+ Hotstar. Major sporting events, including the IPL, WPL, ICC tournaments, and Premier League matches, will all be available in one place.
Sanjog Gupta, CEO of Sports at JioStar, emphasized the platform’s role in revolutionizing live sports experiences for Indian fans. “Sports in India is more than just a game—it’s a shared experience that unites millions,” he said. JioHotstar promises to enhance sports viewership with advanced features like AI-powered insights, real-time statistics overlays, multi-angle viewing options, and curated content feeds tailored to individual user interests.
